Scooter & Moped Reg Check

Check a scooter or moped by its number plate, then ask for a free pro report with MOT history, mileage and keeper details.

Check a motorbike now

Enter the registration to see the bike’s details and request a free Pro report.

What the check shows for scooters and mopeds

Enter a registration above and, if the scooter or moped is found, you will see its make, model, year, colour, engine size, fuel, MOT status and expiry, the mileage at the last MOT and the keeper count. The free pro report adds every MOT test, a mileage check, tax and MOT status, plate and colour change history and keeper dates.

Results depend on the registration being found. Some very old or small machines may not return a result. If that happens, check the plate and try again, or ask the seller for the V5C.

Moped, scooter or motorbike: how they are classed

“Scooter” describes the style of the machine, not a legal category. What matters is the engine size and top speed:

  • Mopeds are generally small machines up to 50cc with a limited top speed and are covered by the AM licence category.
  • Light motorcycles are up to 125cc and are covered by an A1 licence.
  • Larger scooters and motorcycles need an A2 or full A licence depending on power.

Always check the exact licence category for the bike you plan to ride on the government’s motorcycle and moped licence page. This check is for registered motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. It does not cover pedal cycles or electric scooters without a registration number.

Do mopeds and scooters need an MOT and tax?

Mopeds and scooters used on the road generally need to be taxed and insured and, once they are three years old, to have a valid MOT, in the same way as other motorcycles. Smaller machines usually fall into the lowest tax band. Because exemptions apply to some vehicles, check your own scooter on the government’s vehicle tax and MOT pages. See our MOT history check and tax check guides for how those work.

Buying a used scooter: quick checks

  • Run the reg check and compare make, model, colour and engine size with the advert.
  • Look at the MOT history for repeated advisories, failures and mileage that goes down.
  • Ask to see the V5C and match the frame number and the seller’s details.
  • Check the tyres, brakes, belt and variator noise, lights, battery and under-seat storage for damage and repairs.
  • Start the scooter from cold and look for smoke, rattles and leaks.

Our used motorbike checklist covers the paperwork and inspection steps in more depth, and most of it applies to scooters.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a scooter reg check by number plate?

Yes. Enter the registration above. If the scooter or moped is found you will see its details and MOT status, and you can request the free pro report.

Is a moped reg check different to a motorbike check?

The lookup works the same way for any registered motorcycle, scooter or moped. The legal rules about licences, MOT and tax are what differ.

Do mopeds need an MOT?

Mopeds and scooters used on the road generally need an MOT from their third anniversary, though some vehicles are exempt. Check your own vehicle’s rules on the government website.

Why did my scooter registration not return a result?

Some very old or small machines may not be found. Check the plate for typing mistakes and ask the seller for the V5C.

Is the scooter check free?

Yes. The lookup is free and so is the pro report for now. Our team emails each report within 24 hours.
